monteverdi's are my favorites, but in particular the one i always go back to is l'orfeo
it's basically an opera about orpheus even though the names are a little different
orfeo basically being orpheus for example
it comes in five acts so it's long but god the music
i'd share it if it could but i don't have anything from home here

Why does that one in particular speak to you?

If I were being difficult, I would draw a conclusion of my own. But as a friend, I would like to hear you explain it for yourself.

no, it's more like
an opera is such an unabashed expression of the self. loud and full of character. usually it's dark and difficult, but bittersweet.
this one in particular, maybe it's because i always found the subject of love to be hard but relatable.

And it's important to listen to the overture, because that's where you'll hear all the leitmotifs that will come into play later?

I assume the opera ends the same way the story it's based on does. Orpheus doesn't succeed in his aims because of his own failings, and perishes later from his sorrow.

it's always important to listen to the overture. especially if you like clues.

it's not dissimilar. technically there are two endings, but usually the one performed includes apollo coming down and taking orfeo to the heavens so he can see his lover's likeness in the stars. he ascends after that.

You'd be surprised how often criminals resort to classical references out of a desire to appear cultured and elite. Grandfather stressed the importance of knowing them. I had a similar experience with one of my

with someone else, and tarot cards. He was surprised I knew a relatively obscure reference to something about the tarot. But that's the sort of symbology that criminals love to draw on.

But on second thought, I probably don't have to tell you any of that, do I?

The point of the opera is to inspire emotion, and to resonate with the viewer, correct? It sounds nice, to sit in a quiet dark theater and just...experience something like that, in a controlled setting and an unobtrusive manner.

It's interesting how the way we see ourselves doesn't always align with the way we're perceived by others. We're so certain we know ourselves best — we must, since we're the only ones who have all the information, while others only see the parts of ourselves that we allow them to see.

But I think we're just as biased, in our own ways. We put too much weight on what's inside our own heads, and miss other things as a result.
